Sometimes people don’t realize how important their domain is. A domain is the address of your website ie: oceanwave.ca is one of my domains. It’s vital that you control and protect the information that is needed to administer your domain.

If you own a domain or are considering registering one you need to safeguard your domain information for the following reasons:

1. So you can move your website to another hosting provider when you want.
2. The domain is your asset and you are reponsible for protecting it.
3. If you lose control of the domain you also lose the associated email addresses.
4. Your email is often associated with on-line accounts and your personal identity so you’ll want to guard it closely.
5. You’ll be able to maintain your contact information at the domain registry to protect your domain assets.

Each of my clients has their domain registered in their own name. Their domains are not dependent on Oceanwave—if I was to no longer be available the domain registrar company I am affiliated with, Domain People, will continue to send out renewal notices with a link to where they can renew. They can log into their domain account through either oceanwave.ca/domains or domainpeople.ca or domainpeople.com with the same account credentials.

When you control your own domain you are free to move to a different registrar at any time. However, it’s best not to transfer if you are close to the renewal date.

Please review your domain information to make sure of the following:

1. Check that your contact information is correct—particularly the email address.
2. Make sure you have a strong password protecting your account and it’s stored in a safe place.

Accessibility is about making sure everybody can access your content. Accessibility is something you must do—and also because it’s the right thing to do.

Think about it. There are large numbers of people, whole segments of our population that have various degrees of ability and need to access information in different ways. Vision impaired people for example may use a screen reader. There are many people who can’t use a mouse and need keyboard shortcuts or other means to browse the web.

In the US it is law (referred to as Section 508) and you must follow it to do business with the US Government. In Canada it is recommended practice and we have guidelines.

By taking a web-standards-based approach you can go a long way towards meeting these guidelines. To not do so is short-sighted.

Making your website accessible will not only make you feel better but as a bonus it will tend to help you with search engines. Search engine spiders (computer programs that check out your web site) look at your site in a similar way as assistive reading devices.
